Luck egalitarianism and non‐overlapping generations

چکیده

This paper argues that there are good reasons to limit the scope of luck egalitarianism co-existing people. First, I outline be sceptical about how “luck” works intergenerationally and therefore very grounding between non-overlapping generations. Second, argue what Kasper Lippert-Rasmussen calls “core egalitarian claim” allows significant intergenerational inequality which is a problem for those who object such inequality. Third, cannot accommodate intuition it might required leave future generations better off than we are, even if would come at no cost ourselves. Finally, following another, broader, version require us level down possibly ourselves, persuaded by levelling-down objection.

Luck Egalitarianism and Political Solidarity

Luck egalitarianism — the theory that makes individual responsibility central to distributive justice, so that bad luck underwrites a more compelling case for redistribution than do the bad choices of the disadvantaged — has recently come under a sustained attack from critics who are deeply committed to the broader struggle for equality. These egalitarian critics object, first, that luck egalit...

Egalitarianism, option luck and insurance markets

It is argued here that individuals should never be held responsible for being lucky or unlucky, so that the notion of option luck is prima facie unacceptable. But applying the Conditional Equality and Egalitarian Equivalence criteria to problems of allocation under risk provides a rationale for policies which are sometimes similar to policies based on the notion of option luck. Dworkin’s concep...

Tough luck and tough choices: applying luck egalitarianism to oral health.

Luck egalitarianism is often taken to task for its alleged harsh implications. For example, it may seem to imply a policy of nonassistance toward uninsured reckless drivers who suffer injuries. Luck egalitarians respond to such objections partly by pointing to a number of factors pertaining to the cases being debated, which suggests that their stance is less inattentive to the plight of the vic...

Neutral Genetic Patterns for Expanding Populations with Nonoverlapping Generations.

We investigate the inside dynamics of solutions to integrodifference equations to understand the genetic consequences of a population with nonoverlapping generations undergoing range expansion. To obtain the inside dynamics, we decompose the solution into neutral genetic components. The inside dynamics are given by the spatiotemporal evolution of the neutral genetic components. We consider thin...

Drinking in the last chance saloon: luck egalitarianism, alcohol consumption, and the organ transplant waiting list.

The scarcity of livers available for transplants forces tough choices upon us. Lives for those not receiving a transplant are likely to be short. One large group of potential recipients needs a new liver because of alcohol consumption, while others suffer for reasons unrelated to their own behaviour. Should the former group receive lower priority when scarce livers are allocated? This discussio...
